Virgen de Guadalupe

La imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe forma parte de la vida cotidiana de la sociedad mexicana. No es difícil encontrarla en cada esquina, fonda, altar, taxi o incluso impresa como tatuaje en la piel de mujeres y hombres de cualquier clase social. Para la mayoría de los mexicanos la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe ha servido como escudo, estandarte y arma en nuestras luchas personales y de grupo. Ha estado presente en la mayoría de los movimientos sociales que ha vivido nuestro país, pero levantando, también, suficiente interes como para haber sido admirada y prestada por el resto del mundo. Los mexicanos tenemos una relación muy profunda con la Virgen de Guadalupe, una relación que se puede comparar con la de nuestra madre, ya sea solemne o divertida, pero siempre muy respetuosa. A la Guadalupana la conocemos tanto, que un solo detalle significa el total. Podemos ver las manos, una estrella del manto, un angelito o la mirada de sus ojos para saber que se trata de la Virgen de Guadalupe. La Guadalupana nos permite entender la idiosincracia del pueblo mexicano porque significa mucho mas que un simbolo religioso, es la representante del inquebrantable amor maternal, compasiva y entendedora de nuestro sufrimiento y suficientemente poderosa como para ser parte de nuestras vicisitudes diarias, actuando en nuestro beneficio, escuchando y contestando nuestros rezos, produciendo milagros desde tiempos prehispanicos. Estas cualidades representan el motivo ideal para el artista mexicano moderno en busca de la expresion espiritual por los siglos de los siglos. Morena y llena de gracia, la Virgen de Guadalupe, con su corazon incorruptible, se adapta a las necesidades de los tiempos modernos sin perder un apice de su poder y personalidad. The image of la Virgen de Guadalupe is part of the daily life in Mexican culture. It is not difficult to find it in any corner, restaurant, taxi, homemade shrine, or even as a tattoo engraved in the skin of women and men of every walk of life. For most Mexicans the image of la Virgen de Guadalupe has served as flag, banner, or coat of arms in our personal and group quests. It has been present in most social and political movements in our country, but is interesting enough to be admired and borrowed by the rest of the world. We Mexicans have a very profound relationship with la Virgen de Guadalupe, comparable to the one we have with our own mother, no matter if it is solemn or light hearted, but always with a big respect. We have an instinctive knowledge of it, so deeply rooted that the small detail of its image represents the whole. Just a portion of her cloak, her hands, the little angels, or the gaze of her eyes brings the full recognition of the symbol. La Guadalupana allows us to understand the idiosyncracy of the Mexican people because it means more to us than a religious symbol, representing the everlasting Mother Love, compassionate and understanding of our suffering, and powerful enough to be part of our daily lives, acting in our behalf, listening and answering our prayers, producing miracles since prehispanic times. These qualities represent an ideal motif for the modern Mexican artist in search of the expression of the spiritual substance that spans centuries.
